Our Focus on Employment
At Local Heart Community, we believe employment is about more than just financial security — it’s about purpose, identity, connection, and a sense of belonging.
Our employment mentoring program is built on the understanding that many people face significant barriers to entering the workforce, including disability, trauma, limited education, or lack of support. That’s why we take a personalised, one-on-one approach — focusing on each participant’s unique strengths, goals, and challenges.
Our mentors work alongside participants to build confidence, develop job-readiness skills, and explore opportunities that align with their interests and values. From creating resumes to practicing interviews, accessing training, and navigating job search systems, we’re there every step of the way — empowering participants to achieve meaningful and sustainable employment outcomes.
Examples include:
Supporting participants to complete short courses or training
Practising interview skills and building resumes together
Exploring volunteer roles or work experience placements
Helping participants identify career goals and pathways
Attending job fairs or workplace introductions alongside participants

Through trust-based relationships, our mentors help participants recognise their strengths, build resilience, and feel more connected to themselves and their community. This support is flexible and tailored — whether it's helping with daily routines, exploring interests, or overcoming specific challenges.

Independent Living Skills
At Local Heart Community, we support participants to develop the practical life skills they need to live more independently and confidently.
We know that everyday tasks like cooking, cleaning, budgeting, and using public transport can feel overwhelming — especially for those navigating barriers like disability, mental health challenges, or limited support. That’s why our mentors work side-by-side with participants, offering hands-on guidance, encouragement, and strategies tailored to each person’s needs and pace.
Our goal is to build skills for life — helping participants take greater control of their daily routines and feel proud of their progress.
Examples include:
Cooking simple, healthy meals together
Learning how to manage cleaning and home organisation
Practising catching public transport confidently and safely
Supporting time management, budgeting, and shopping
